Ever had the need to point one (preferred) domain from another registrant to an existing website (which has another domain registered by another webhost)? Or, say, you simply have to register this perfect domain name from another registrant (another webhost) and now use 2 domains to point to the same website?
With the technical support and advise from both webhosts, the following, simple steps may be useful.
  1. Secure the correct server names and IP addresses of current webhost/domain account (let's call this webhost1). There should be two (2) sets of server names/IP and will look like: ns1.servername.com and ns2.servername.com
  2. Go to webhost2 or the external registrar where another domain is currently registered. There should normally be a domain management tool where server names and IP addresses can be modified. Make a backup of the default (normally there is an option to simply revert back to default settings), then enter the servernames and IP addresses of webhost1. This is saying external domain from webhost1 will now be mapped to server/s of webhost2.
  3. Wait for DNS changes to be replicated and propagated. This is at least 24 to 48 hours.
  4. To test DNS settings now points to the correct servers, try a whois tool from DNS Stuff http://www.dnsstuff.com/ which has a quick and user-friendly tool for this. Enter externally hosted domain and confirm DNS changes is successful (servernames will now be of webhost2 ).
  5. Finally, an additional step of parking the external domain to current webhost account (webhost2) is requirred. In webhost2, go to cPanel > Domains > Parked domains > add the domain as a parked domain.
  6. Then test if externally-registered domain now redirects to website hosted on webhost2.
